C3 WiR(e) – 2013-10-07

Ranters! It is October 7th, 2013. I am Anthony Rossi, aka Hyp3rSint4x from the Coffee and Cornchips gaming blog with the C3 WiR(e), a week in review recap of the gaming world. This week’s headlines include:

  • Mighty Number 9 reaches Kickstarter Stretch Goals
  • The latest in the Hobbit movie series has a new trailer
  • Valve applies for Half Life 3 trademark
  • Deus Ex enters the Next Gen Era
  • Destiny gets a new Gameplay Trailer and Beta Testing opens

Let the gaming news begin!

Mighty Number 9 is the latest concept from the creator of Mega Man, and is definitely an updated ode to one of the most recognizable robots in gaming history. The game will be a classic 2D side scrolling adventure, with the main protagonist, the Mighty Number 9, having a similar blast cannon arm like his inspiration, Mega Man. With a total of over 4 million dollars raised, it has been confirmed that a version will have additional releases on the next gen consoles.

The Sequel to the Prequel has a new trailer! Picking up where “Unexpected Journey” left off, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” has a new trailer. Here, we get to see a few glimpses of Gandalf and Legolas establishing how they came to know Bilbo, we learn that while in the deep Bilbo found his, uhh, “courage”, and we get to hear the great dragon “Smaug” speak, voiced by none other than Benedict Cumberbatch. As a side note, it will be interesting to see if there is any added chemistry between Bilbo and Smaug, since Martin Freeman and Cumberbatch play opposite each other in the BBC series “Sherlock”. The Desolation of Smaug is due out in December.

The internets were all a buzz with some highly skeptical news: closely following after the announcement of the Steam Machines, Valve has reportedly applied for a trade mark “Half-Life 3”. Fans for the Half-Life series have been BEGGING for this for quite some time, with any possible news or hints of even rumors about the possibility that the game may become a reality being excitedly, and consequently falsely, being celebrated. But now, this is one news bit that seems legit. Or it was, until Saturday. According to an update from Gamespot, the trademark for it was removed from the European Union’s OHIM database. However, in its place has appeared a trademark for Portal 3. Glados, is that you?

According to a blog post from Eidos-Montreal, they are ready for a new and highly expansive chapter in the Deus Ex series. Dubbed “Deus Ex Universe”, quote, “The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games”. Along side games on consoles and PC, they also plan on expanding the universe in to alternate mediums such as Tablet, Smartphones, Books, and Graphic Novels. In the meantime, in the same post it was also announced that they will be releasing the Director’s Cut to Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut” on October 22, 2013.

Gamers eagerly chomping at the bit for Bungie’s latest space adventure, “Destiny” were treated with 2 fantastic bits of news! First, we were shown a new gameplay trailer that took us to a new environment, the Moon. Looks like alien life has been living there, under the surface, for quite some time and has quite the stronghold up there! Also, it was made known that those who pre-order the game will receive a 9 digit code that will enter them for a spot in the Beta. Head over to Bungie.net/beta for more information on that.
