C3 WiR(e) – 2014-02-03

Ranters! It is the week of February 3rd, 2014. For Sports Rants Gaming, I am Anthony Rossi from the Coffee and Cornchips gaming blog with the C3 WiR(e), a week in review recap of the gaming world. This week’s headlines include:

  • TV Pilot for Halo to be directed by Neil Blomkamp
  • Final Fantasy 14 gets a release date
  • Elder Scrolls Online gets a new trailer
  • PS4 to get backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 emulation
  • Nintendo scrambles for stability
  • Warcraft movie gets a release date
  • Amazon to release it’s own gaming console and a new 16 gig Ouya announced

Let the Gaming News Begin!

Halo TV Pilot
According to an article found on CVG, Neill Blomkamp is set to direct the pilot episode for the hotly anticipated Halo TV series. Blompkamp’s previous work includes District 9, Elysium, Stargate SG-1, and the TV Series Smallville. There is still little known regarding the Halo TV series, but between Spielberg and Blomkamp at the helm I’m sure this will be quite the production!

Final Fantasy 14
Playstation users will be able to take another shot at the Final Fantasy MMO the fell short a few years back. The release date for the game is set for April 14th, with beta testing beginning on February 22nd. Also announced was the Collector’s Edition, which comes with all sorts of additional goodies such as a wind-up Moogle and a Fat Chocobo Mount, which I’m sure no game-cave is complete without! Purchasers of the PS3 version of the game will be able to upgrade for free.

Elderscrolls Online
A new trailer has been released by Bethesda, aptly named “The Arrival” in anticipation of their MMO Elderscrolls Online. This trailer, as like the one before it, looks amazing. As a console gamer, I was very excited to hear that it will be coming to Next-Gen platforms as well. However, all that is gleeful is cut short when you hear about the pricing. You see, most MMO’s are generally free to play, and the companies make their money through micro-transactions. ESO, on the other hand, is the standard Triple A release price of $59.99! After that, it’s an additional $15 per month subscription fee! I’m a fairly big fan of the Elderscrolls series, but after hearing those prices? Ha ha, ha ha, ha… No.

PS4 Backward Compatibility
Upon the announcement of the Next-Gen consoles, the online community was pretty frustrated that the new systems were not to be Backwards Compatible. Nintendo’s Wii console has long had it’s “Virtual Console” where games could download the games of their childhood, or younger gamers can see what games were like before the internet. In a post from NowGamer, Sony plans on bringing the same concept to the PS4 in the form of emulation. Time to blow the dust off your old PS1 games, or head to your local retro gaming shop and see what they’ve got.

Nintendo News
As most people know, Nintendo has been in some financial trouble. So much so, that their executive teams have agreed to a paycut, and quite a massive one! In the meantime, Nintendo has made a few additional announcements, such as bringing Nintendo DS games to the Virtual Console on the Wii U systems. While I think this is a great step in streamlining all of their systems, I still think that they need to either commit to mobile gaming or completely re-hash the Wii U. Because let’s face it, releasing yet another iteration of Mario-Kart isn’t going to breathe new life in to the floundering console.

Warcraft Movie
Not much has been mentioned regarding the Warcraft movie as of late, but one thing that has surfaced is it’s March 11, 2016 release date! Head over to ComingSoon.net for a full list of actors and a few Production Stills, which look absolutely EPIC!

New Budget Consoles
Later this year, expect two new budget minded consoles to hit the market. The first is a new 16GB version of the Ouya, that little cube with the big heart. The new Ouya will be priced at $129.99, $30 more than the 8GB base model. Also planned on coming out this year, Amazon, yes the internet shopping site, will be releasing their own gaming and entertainment device “Priced below $300”. This is quite the interesting move, since Amazon is already a top online retailer and already has an online distribution through device model in place through it’s Kindle line-up. The console is planned to be Android based, and will utilize Snapdragon Processors.
